Annual Championship no poultry matter

Whether it was a Bantam or an Ancona, a Leghorn or an Australorp, the chickens were well and truly home to roost at the Midland Junction Poultry Society Annual Championship Show on Saturday. The Society, of which the Hon Judi Moylan MP is a patron, has operated since 1912 and this year welcomed 37 entrants who vied for trophies as a mix of young and experienced breeders showed their chickens; big and small. Poultry Society Life Member Noelene Teague said breeding chickens is an art as much as it is a science, with young people continuing to take up the hobby. “It is a rewarding and lovely hobby,” Mrs Teague said. “From the miracle of watching a chicken hatch, to seeing your breed grow it is really a great thing to be a part of. While many lucky breeders walked away with prizes, Mrs Teague said such rewards were only part of what keeping poultry is about. “The showing side of things really isn’t the most important part, it is the breeding and growing,” she said. “To see your breed grow and improve is the most rewarding part of it.”
