Hon Judi Moylan MP has welcomed the announcement of State Government assistance for residents of the Shire of Chittering and the City of Swan after fires in these local Government’s were declared a natural disaster.
Mrs Moylan said residents are eligible for assistance under the Western Australia Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (WANDRRA) with the State Government to provide immediate financial assistance to those people who have been affected through joint State and Commonwealth disaster relief and recovery arrangements.
Although in Canberra for the first Parliamentary sitting of the year, Mrs Moylan has kept in close contact with the affected areas of the Pearce electorate and was pleased to hear that all previous registered evacuees staying at the Swan Park Centre have now returned either home or to friends and family.
“Crews from Local Government Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades, FESA and the DEC have been working together to assist in bringing the fire under control and I cannot speak highly enough of their efforts,” Mrs Moylan said.
“Approximately 1170ha has been burnt throughout the areas of Brigadoon, Baskerville, Millendon, Red Hill and Herne Hill in the City of Swan, but I am very pleased that no houses have been lost.
”Following the devastating fires which destroyed so many homes in Toodyay after Christmas 2009, and previous fires in the Brigadoon area requiring people to evacuate their homes, there is great sympathy for the people of Roleystone and Kelmscott as they face the terrible loss of property from the recent fire. I am sure that residents of Pearce would join me in wishing the people of Canning a speedy recovery from their heartbreaking losses.”
Mrs Moylan said she would maintain contact with affected local Governments and would offer assistance wherever possible.
