Federal Member for Pearce, the Hon Judi Moylan MP today joined the Shadow Minister for Defence Science, Personnel and Assisting Minister for Defence, Bob Baldwin, for a tour of the Pearce RAAF Base.
The tour followed a breakfast meeting, hosted by Mrs Moylan, where Mr Baldwin met with the Mayor of the City of Swan, Cr Charlie Gregorini and City of Swan chief executive officer Mike Foley.
Mr Baldwin paid a visit to Pearce, as part of his trip to Perth for a special ceremony to lay a wreath over the site of HMAS Sydney.
During the guided tour of the airbase the Shadow Minister was briefed in issues affecting the base.
Minister Baldwin was keen to engage with members of the Australian Defence Force to hear first hand any issues they had to raise.
One of the dominating issues for staff was the cost and availability of rental properties in Perth.
Rents have climbed sharply and most of the staff on the Pearce RAAF base receive a country rent allowance as the Base is in Bullsbrook. The reality however is that there is little available housing in the area. Staff members are then competing for rentals in suburbs the Swan Valley, Hills or on the coast where rentals are much higher.
Mrs Moylan said she was pleased that the Shadow Minister had shown such interest in the Pearce air base.
“Issues affecting the Base often affect the surrounding community,” Mrs Moylan said.
“For the Shadow Minister for Defence Science, Personnel and Assisting Minister for Defence this is a new portfolio and it is reassuring to see him taking notice of the concerns and happenings of the Pearce RAAF Base.”
