Australian Defence Medal Presentations in Pearce
Posted on Monday, 21 April 2008
Federal Member for Pearce, the Hon Judi Moylan MP, today presented 22 deserving Pearce residents with the Australian Defence Medal.
Mrs Moylan was joined by Commander Simon Ottaviano RAN, Commanding Officer Joint Logistics Unit (West) and the State President of the RSL, Mr Bill Gaynor OAM for the ceremony.
The Australian Defence Medal was established to recognise ADF Regular and Reserve personnel who have demonstrated their service to the nation by serving four years or their initial enlistment period, whichever is lesser, since the end of World War 11.
Both volunteers and national servicemen are eligible for a medal.
Mrs Moylan said the medals gave long over due recognition to many Australian servicemen and women.
“Many Australians have been distinguished in battle with campaign, service medals and gallantry awards over the last century,” Mrs Moylan said.
“However the performance of those personnel engaged in Australia in support of larger operations or individually contributing to the security of the nation has often gone unrecognised. Some tasks undertaken by ADF personnel remain invisible to the community at large and due to their very nature, cannot be recognised by an operational service award. This medal goes a long way in recognising this shortfall.”
Mrs Moylan thanked all recipients for their service to their country, while RSL State President Bill Gaynor urged everyone to show off their medals on Anzac Day.
“Join a march and wear them proudly,” he said.
