Pearce- Taking a different shape
Posted on Wednesday, 13 August 2008
WA Federal Electoral boundaries are shifting, and the expectation is that Pearce will be cut-to-size.
Many areas in the electorate have undergone rapid development and growth resulting in about 20,000 too many enrolled voters.
A proposal by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) will see the seat of Pearce represented by the Hon Judi Moylan MP, change shape.
To more evenly distribute federal representation, the AEC proposes to redistribute localities such as Mindarie and Clarkson in the coastal area, Boddington in the electorate’s south-west and Narrogin, Brookton, Cuballing, Pingelly, Wandering and Williams in the wheatbelt, to neighbouring electorates.
Approximately 8,127 voters from the areas of Mindarie and Clarkson will become part of the Division of Moore, whereas wheat-belt regions will move into the seat of Kalgoorlie with Boddington joining Canning.
This is Pearce’s third redistribution while Mrs Moylan has been the Federal Representative.
“It is always difficult to lose areas that have been a part of Pearce,” she said.
“I have enjoyed working with people in Mindarie and Clarkson as well as the rural areas and I have very much appreciated their support.”
“For a sitting member doing their job, it is never palatable to lose areas.”
Mrs Moylan said she will continue to steadfastly represent the entire Pearce electorate until the proposed election in 2010 and will make regular visits to all regions when Parliament is not in session.
