Pearce Unites for Environment

The message was strong and clear, everybody can contribute to a better environment and a cleaner future, starting now. Environmental groups, community organisations, shire representatives and concerned Pearce residents converged on Guildford last night to attend Our Patch Our Planet an environment forum hosted by the Hon Judi Moylan MP. Up to 60 people joined speakers including Hon Greg Hunt, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, Environment and Urban Water, Professor Peter Newman, sustainability expert, Bob Williamson, Founding Chairman and Director Greenhouse Neutral Foundation and Linda Soteriou, General Manager Swan Catchment Council. From improved public transport and the unpackaged movement, to Australia’s future facing Climate Change and local Pearce environmental projects, discussion was varied and constructive. Mr Hunt called on the Federal Government to reverse the solar means test to give the solar sector a future and Pearce mums and dads a chance to become solar energy producers, while Professor Newman spoke about decreasing our dependence on cars. Opening the event, Mrs Moylan said the forum is a result of strong environmental interest in Pearce and it was great to see so many people committed to securing a clean future. “The best thing we can do for our planet is to act now to combat climate change, we have a responsibility to protect the environment for future generations and ensure they can enjoy this world as we have,” she said. “Government’s scope should not be limited to emissions trading, there are so many options available to clean up our planet- renewable energy and increased public transport are just some prospects.” “All Our Patch Our Planet legitimate ideas and solutions will be put to the Labor Government and Federal Climate Change Minister Penny Wong.” This is Mrs Moylan’s second environment forum; during October 2001 she hosted a seminar in Mundaring about sustainable societies, salinity and local landcare involvement.
